Soumas Heritage Creole Cookbook

A must have Cookbook!!!!
I love cucumbers, and the recipe "A Cool & Crazy Creole Cucumber" is delicious. I had to make myself stop eating it before I turned into a cucumber! I also love the "Creole Red Beans-n-Rice and Pope's Pralines." Plus the history is wonderful. It is great that Ms. Soumas and her family was able to keep up with the family history throughout the generations. Maybe this cookbook will inspire other African-American families to cherish their family history and traditional family recipes. Just the history alone is worth reading.

Cooking with Flavor
Panderina has done a wonderful job of blending history and cooking to create this excellent Creole cookbook....it's not just a cookbook...it's a story of a family from decades past to this new millennium......family recipes that have been verbally passed on from generation to generation are included in the cookbook....the language she uses and the history behind the recipes provide an aura in the kitchen while preparing these delicious dishes.....the flavor of Louisiana cuisine has truely been captured inside the pages of this cookbook....it's definitly a keepsake......

Fantastick!
Wonderfully written cookbook with cultural and family stories to spice it up. Outstanding!

Lorenzo Schiavo and Felipe Gravier
Romeo and Juliet

Felipe Gravier and Lorenzo Schiavo review:

We think that Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two star-crossed lovers whose families are in a terrible fight which prevents them from coming together. How far the couple will go to be together becomes the focus of the story. Of his richest poetry. The opening and closing choruses are some of his most outstanding work. Romeo's It is a brilliant love story but not much more. It still possesses however some wooing of Juliet is fabulously written. The Friar gets the best lines. Mercutio is one the best friends of Romeo. It is not as good as Shakespeare has written but it's still a fabulous book and up there with his best work. One part of the play we didn't like was that for the tow families get arrange there two kids had to die.
The English language wasn't finally finished so Shakespeare had the liberty to create words and play with the language, as he liked. That's why It was so difficult to understand what each character wanted to express so the teacher had to explain us each of that words and teach us all the words in that age and told us which were the words in the English of today.

Interesting Storys
This book provides lots of Shakespeare's Storys like "A Midsummer's Night Dream" and "Hamlet" with a children's fairy tale twist. The storys are the same as Shakespeare's, but easier for children to understand. My favorite story was Hamlet because I had just seen the play. A while after we read Children's Shakespeare and it helped me to understand Hamlet better.

Shakespeare is for children too!
Shakespeare is for kids and adults in E. Nesbit's creative mind. I always liked fairy tales, but I couldn't read Shakespeare very well. In Children's Shakespeare E. Nesbit turned his work into fairy tales without changing the story and morals. This book is not much like Nesbit's other books because it was written by Shakespeare, but I bet there are some simularities.

This book was a overall well writen book and I beleive E. Nesbit put a lot of hard work into her books in her life-time. I'm sure if she were alive now she would still be writing good books to this day.

Perfect for Families with Religous Diversity
Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Noahides--any faith that embraces the biblical story of Noah-- can all agree on the universal ethical values taught in this delightful childrens book. Daphne Cohen has written the perfect book for me to share with my grandchildren and participate in their spiritual development without compromising my religous beliefs or violating the faith they are taught at home. A blessing for us all!

Great Ethical Values
"...these ethical values and principles have been the bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization, when they were known as the Seven Noahide Laws."

The Rainbow Covenant
"The ideas in this book are presented in a manner that will help communicate the Seven Universal Laws of Noah to younger readers. Adults will also enjoy reading this book along with their children. It makes the facts of the rainbow covenant relevant to all ages."

A gem!
In a world full of hate, violence, and selfishness, this book helps us remember each other in the best of ways. It helped found the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation and is responsible of Random Acts of Kindness week. The publishers at Conari Press have truly created a timeless work of inspiration and beauty. Go out and commit a random act of kindness yourself!

It was inspiring and warm
I listened to this book on tape on my morning walk. I've listened to it many times and it always starts my day off with a positive feeling. It inspired me to do kind things for people - like giving 10 hamburgers to a homeless man with my son. He told his class and many children went out that week and did more kind things so that they could share their kind acts with the class. It had a great ripple effect.

This book has created a revolution in thinking & lifestyle.
Random Acts of Kindness got me thinking more deeply about my actions and how I influence young people. It inspired me to write a children's book, THE KING OF KINDNESS.

True Love: How to Make Your Relationship Sweeter, Deeper and More Passionate
Published in Paperback by Conari Pr (December, 1994)
Author: Daphne Rose Kingma
Average review score:

fast book to look at your relationship more closely
I bought this book at the end of my last relationship (a little too late) and realised that barring any major problems in the relationship this little book actually emphasizes all the essential things that a person needs to look at concerning relationships. She writes in very small workable sections that get your mind going. For instance she might use two pages for an introduction then 2 for a forward then the four chapters are made up of 2-3 page topics. Every topic for instance one might be on "small ways to show appreciation" These little topics contain in a very simple forward way how to get back the trust and love in a relationship or how to get the blood flowing in it. I suppose if you are already in a healthy relationship or think about being in a healthy relationship I would suggest the book just as much because it gives you the insight to recognise all the healthy ways to look at a relationship... This book isn't preachy or flat intellectualism, it is a good read. If you need help in a relationship this book makes the idea of bring back life in it very barable. Blessed Be

Touching book on love
I recommend this book to anyone in love. It really makes you appreciate and value what you have. It brought tears to my eyes when I realised how much I value the love I have and how special it is.

wonderfull little book
I found the book very easy to read. I think each chapter should be carefully practiced daily by both partners. I am going to share this book with my Mom and my sister because I think they should seriously apply this book to their relationships.

African Elephants: A Celebration of Majesty
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Press, Inc. (February, 1998)
Authors: Daryl Balfour, Sharna Balfour, Iain Douglas-Hamilton, John Hanks, and Daphne Sheldrick
Average review score:

Impressive book for the photographs & text
This is a most impressive book on the African Elephant, with page after page of fabulous photos of these mighty beasts. It would make a great coffee table book just for the pictures but it is much more than that.

The main focus is on preservation of the species in the face of shrinking habitats and the poaching for ivory that continues today. The efforts of 16 African wildlife preserves and parks are fully described here.

Each region is profiled with information on its elephants and several photos of the elephants specific to that area. The mature huge tuskers of Kruger National Park are truly awesome.

There is also plenty of information on elephant history, physiology and social interaction. This is a beautiful and significant book on the life and challenges facing the African Elephant.

A Wonderful Book
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in African elephants. It combines outstanding photographs with interesting and entertaining text.

Absolutly moving.
This book moved me beyond what feelings I have ever known. I learned a great deal of facts from this book and hope to share them with others. I urge other readers to cherish this book...as I do.

Hungry Hill by Daphne Du Maurier
I received the book in an excellent time. It is in good condition. I am excited to read the book and know it will be a good asset to my library. Thank you so much. I will purchase more from you if you have what I need come to auction.

Great Read!!!
A fascinating look at a wealthy family incompassing several generations. A truly remarkable work of fiction. Du Maurier, in my opinion, was one of the best storytellers of the 20th century. Without being overly philisophical she was brilliant in the way she wove a story together, and was almost poetic in her writing technique. The story is never dull and never predictable. A great read. Probably only available in used bookstores.

Majestic
Exquisite period view of our living experience. From the "arranged" to the destined, by choice or by consequence maybe we can never be certain. You can feel the wind in your hair standing overlooking the moor with the smell of the damp earth beneath your soul ... the manor faintly lit by the evening light as you return with the dogs at your feet... the taker or the giver. Fate awaits you... a remarkable story of a generation etched in a time gone by. Daphne du Marier at her finest.

The Future of Love: The Power of the Soul in Intimate Relationships
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (February, 1998)
Author: Daphne Rose Kingma
Average review score:

Understanding the "purpose" of LOVE is the key to bliss
What a book this has been, and the timing has been impecable for when it fell into my hands. Daphne, thanx for the clear message on the purpose of our relationships, and how to change our perspective to see their value.

By seeing my relationship through a new set of "spiritual" eyes, tense "moments" are now seen as spiritual grouth oppertunities and are not emotionaly shattering.

In my view, every person on this planet could find value in this book, and it could make relationships MUCH easier than our traditional way of thinking.

Profound, and extremely powerful book indeed.

The Power of Love
This book has profound insight and brilliance on every page. Your eyes will be opened to the higher power of relationships that Kingma shows is very real, and very possible. It is an essential book for anyone who has been in a relationship. A definite must read!

Why failed marriages are the key to love!
A wonderful book that I wish everyone could read. Instead of seeing divorces as failures, they are steps on the road to realizing -- no, to EXPANDING ourselves into pure, unconditional love. Kingma explains why marriages/relationships really fail and how, as spiritually strong and independent beings, we can experience a more encompassing type of love. Relationships are "a journey of self-creation" where "our wholeness is emerging". "The future of love is true love, a great, sweet love that isn't pain but joy, not small but vast, not personal but spiritual". In the past, "our marriages become watered-down versions of the values of society, instead of vibrant emotional unions that nourish the people within them."

Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (06 June, 2003)
Author: Daphne West
Average review score:

Geared more towards students than tourists
TEACH YOURSELF BEGINNER'S RUSSIAN SCRIPT, by Dr. Daphne West, is a concise introduction to the cyrillic alphabet as used in the Russian language. It begins by teaching the letters a few at a time, then introduces the cursive form of the alphabet, and finally gives practice on reading common words.

I read the book to prepare for a vacation in Kyiv and was a bit disappointed that the book was written much more for future students of the Russian language than for tourists. While there are sections that deal with vocabulary of town and transport, much of the book introduces vocabulary that is not everyday. My other complaint is that cyrillic letters found in other former-soviet languages are not taught in the book. I understand that this is beginner's *Russian* script, but a two-page appendix that shows other cyrillic letters and their sounds would have been most helpful.

Also, for those hoping to finally master the difficult cursive form of the alphabet, you may be disappointed to see that there are only four pages dedicated to it.

All in all, if you are looking to learn just the alphabet for whatever reason, TEACH YOURSELF BEGINNER'S RUSSIAN SCRIPT is probably the best value, as it is less expensive than buying a full-fledged Russian textbook. It does have its flaws, however.

Planning to learn Russian? Get this book FIRST!
Before you start to learn Russian, I highly recommend that you get this book FIRST!!! I'm presently teaching myself Russian, and it is best to start by learning to decipher, first, the Cyrillic alphabet before learning Russian grammar.

And it's quite useful! Recently I was in the Russian neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, waiting for the bus that would take me to Kingsborough Community College to attend my swim class. As that bus usually takes a while to come, I used that time to try to mentally translate the Russian names of the stores in the area! A bit challenging, yes. But I had fun doing it! Like most people, the Cyrillic alphabet always seemed to me so imposing and frightening. But it really isn't once you've learned it. Now, whenever I come across words in Cyrillic in my routine travels, the first thing I often do is try to mentally interpret it. My desire to learn Russian came after viewing and listening to the Russian-language version of "The Amphibian Man" (1961) on DVD. Which I proudly, and happily, own!

Chapters 6 and 7 of 'TY Beginner's Russian Script' teach you how to write in cursive Russian. I'm presently in Chapter 6. Writing in cursive Russian can be a little tricky at times . But I intend to keep right on practicing until I get the cursives down pat.

I also own 'Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian' and 'Living Language Russian', which I would later use to learn how to speak in Russian, and learn the pronunciation of Russian words.

But this is an excellent aid in learning the Russian alphabet. Out of all my 'Teach Yourself' texts in French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, 'Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script' is the smallest and most compact! I love this book!

This is the place to start when learning Russian
Ok, so you want to learn Russian. Perhaps you're thinking of visiting the country, or maybe you just want to decipher that odd-looking Cyrillic alphabet. In either case, start with "Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script"! By spending a few hours with this book, you'll be MUCH better prepared to follow up with the many Russian phrasebooks for tourists. I've tried the reverse -- bought the phrasebooks and tried to memorize the sayings, but this way is much better. If you can learn to "decode" the Russian alphabet first, you'll find that you already know many, many Russian words, just by the way they sound. Dr. West combines a very logical approach to the Russian alphabet with fun exercises. You will find yourself reading Russian words by page 3. I was a professional linguist for many years and have studied Czech, French and German, so believe me when I say that this is really a nice little book for getting started in Russian. Will you be able to speak Russian when you finish this book? Of course not! But you'll have the right tools to decode that darn alphabet and for continuing on in learning Russian phrases. Do yourself a favor and don't skip this important first step.
